About

The images that comprise the demo set represent the generative transformations within the University of Chicago’s relationship to campus spaces and the University’s location within the South side of Chicago. The demo set explores how human intervention in the form of public art and contemplative communal engagement generates a foothold from which positive change can occur. The first image of the set is architect Henry Ives Cobbs’ 1891 building plan for University’s central campus while the last image is a still from artist Cai Guo-Qiang‘s (蔡國強) 2017 subversive, yet hopeful, on-campus performance piece Color Mushroom Cloud. The curatorial decisions that underpin this set are an attempt to both trace and enact the University’s motto: “Let knowledge grow from more to more; and so be human life enriched.”
